I watched, too.

A. I thought he was weak on the issue of employers. He mentioned how employers can't verify documents and how he wants to set up a system that lets them. He made NO mention of how many employers don't even try to verify documents.

B. All that hi-tech gadgetry at the border will cost $$$. If this bill passes, invest in Lockheed Martin stock And maybe an outsourcer or two (CSC and EDS come to mind).

That's what I thought too - no mention of any punitive measures for employers who hire illegals. That 'document verification' system will likely be a juicy federal contract... As will "the most technologically advanced border surveillance system"

Yes. I'd love to work on the document verification project but my employer is unlikely to get the work.

I was in the room when one of my past employers called the SSA to verify that my SSN was actually mine.

Probably wise. A US soldier shooting a Mexican citizen (even if it's a coyote with a loaded gun) on US soil would be a PR nightmare.

Even just the process of filing all those applications would probably back things up. AND implementing a new program would definitely slow things down while it is being learned.

Beyond that, you need to check if the person is employment-authorized. You can't do that with a phone call.

Well as George said, diplomatically speaking, its not a good idea to militarise your borders. That usually starts wars... Not that Mexico is likely to do anything - but it could create a "Cuban Missile Crisis". In theory...

I will agree with you on that. But, I AM happy that it is NOT unconditional amnesty.

All this ####### still has to pass the House and Senate yet. So, it is mostly "lip service" anyway.

How long you guys think we'll be tough on that border? I say until they have their amnesty. Then the National Guard will have other things to do and the next 20,000,000 will come to get in place for the next amnesty in 2015 or so. If there are no hard fines on employers that hire illegals (I'm talking monetary fines of the kind that would put any business out of business and hard time for the greedy executives of such companies), there's no support from me. And there will be no vote from me for anyone that supports anything less. Democrat or Republican. It's just that simple.

It was immediately suspicious when GWB had to tell explain that what he was suggesting didn't amount to anamnesty (and of course throw a passing criticising criticism at those who think different). Sure sounded like amnesty, perhaps under a different name, but clearly an amnesty of some kind.
