A balikbayan box (literally returnee's box) is a ubiquitous cardboard box containing any number of small items and sent by an overseas Filipino known as a "balikbayan". Though often shipped by freight forwarders specializing in balikbayan boxes by sea, such boxes can be brought by Filipinos returning to the Philippines by air.

I haven't visited the PI in 20 years, and that term was never known to me. Thanks :) Your answer begs another question though. What small items are typically included.

Unlike DHL or Fedex, there is much less restrictions in sending a box from us. For as long as there is no liquid and perishable item in the box then you are ready to go.
