AOS/ Consulate did not write complete name!!

Hello everybody, I am hoping someone may be able to help me. My husband has been here 2 and a half months on the K1 visa ( we married last month). We just applied for SS card and are putting together our paperwork for AOS EAD and AP. Monday the SS office told us our application was denied because his visa and I-94 state his last name as SANTOS. His last name is DOS SANTOS which I wrote on all the applications. Social Security sent the appication to Homeland Security which denied his application claiming that his visa must be counterfeit because the names is different!!! I have emailed the consulate in Brazil and their response was do not worry, we always write this type of name this way and you will have no problems. When I wrote back and asked for help regarding SS and Homeland Security their response was sorry, we did everything according to the rules and now you have to deal with it.

Any Advice?

Ps. I am a school teacher with no money for lawyers.

Perhaps he will need to wait until/if he is issued his EAD with his corrected name. Then, SS will honor his application. Our politicians have tied the hands of Social Security on this matter, I fear....based on personal experience with several friends.
