I am wondering how I can get a hold of the application receipt number so that I can receive email updates?

Service Center : California Service Center

Consulate : Guayaquil, Ecuador

06-06-08: I-129F Sent

06-09-08: I-129F Received

06-10-08: NOA1 (online)

06-12-08: Check Cashed

06-16-08: NOA1 (hard copy)

awaiting semi-patiently for my life to arrive...

The number will be on the NOA1 when you receive it but some people are also able to get the number from the back of the cheque once it has been cashed. This is only possible if the bank you use scan them in and make them available to you though. I wouldn't worry about getting email updates at the moment, sadly CSC are still working on Jan applications so you probably have a bit of a wait before you start to see any action.
