I don't think anyone thinks of Arizona as a southern state...

Geography notwithstandng

It does have its yee-haw component and lots of trucks.

Hey now, I'm just listing commonalities.

March 7, 2005: I-129F NOA1

September 20, 2005: K-1 Interview in London. Visa received shortly thereafter.

AOS

December 30, 2005: I-485 received by USCIS

May 5, 2006: Interview at Phoenix district office. Approval pending FBI background check clearance. AOS finally approved almost two years later: February 14, 2008.

Received 10-year green card February 28, 2008

But it certainly would be interesting--Arizona senator presidential candidate and AZ governor VP. Arizona hasn't voted for too many Democrat presidents (one in the last 50 years or so). I'm not sure if such a situation would be enough to turn the electoral tide here. McCain has lost a lot of support in Arizona over the last couple of years mostly because his immigration position is seen as wishy-washy and kowtowing to business interests.

Kidding aside, AZ has little in common with the South. I think that the Phoenix mindset (if such a thing exists) is closer to LA, although there's still a lot of the "rugged individualist" mentality here. An interesting mix statewide--lots of fake boobies and bleach blondes (Scottsdale), but also a big Hispanic population, many retirees from all over the country, large military population--and the outsider perception of AZ still owes a lot to the cowboy mystique. I agree that an even-tempered female governor/former attorney general from a traditionally Republican Western state is a good strategy.
