FYI I tried to go change my FL driver's license with my marriage license but they wouldn't let me.

They said that I need to produce my Resident's card or my Canadian Passport with the updated married name.

I had no problems changing my U.S bank info or my SSN.

why is it illegal to have two different DLs? I really don't know why I want to keep my ON DL but I was going to change my name on my ON DL. I guess it doesn't really matter if I don't have it, I guess I just wanted it as a keepsake or something. I'm weird, I know!

umm cause it would be almost like having two different identities...

really? I don't know why but that doesn't make any sense to me. What about if you have dual citizenship, are you not allowed to have to 2 different passports, lets say a Canadian Passport and an American Passport?

You can have two passports as proof for citizenship, but you won't be able to have two passports for two different countries in two different names without raising suspicion, you know what I am saying? If they are both in your married name, or both in your maiden name, it's not a big deal. Same with driver's licenses.

People use DL's or state ID's with different names as aliases in crimes all the time. They are super sensitive about this at the DMV, hence you having to hand over your old DL in your maiden name.

No I know you can't have them in two different names (maiden and married) but you can have two with the same name right? I guess that was my question and I wasn't clear about it! I understand people would use them for crimes and they would be suspicious of it but I guess I didn't understand why you couldn't have them if they were both in your married name or lets say both in your maiden name if you didn't change your last name.

well, i found this in the CA drivers handbook....

If you have an out-of-state or out of- country license, you must:

Surrender your valid out-of-state driver license. Your out-of-state license will be invalidated and returned unless you are applying for a commercial license.

But what about all the stuff that I have here in Canada like my passport and DL and what not?

At some point you're going to get a DL in the US, and depending on where you're going to live, you can use your passport, just remember to always bring your marriage certificate. I'd order a couple of certified copies so that if you lose one, you'll still have another.

Getting a DL, depending on where you live could be a nightmare...fair warning.

Just wanted to say that in CT they treat your CDN licence as an out of state licence.. so there's no written test or driving test just an eye test (so bring glasses if you need them to drive). Another note, I went on a Saturday to the DMV but they couldn't verify my paperwork with USCIS (or whoever they verifiy your immigration status with) cause it was a non-business day adn they said responses are slow on weekends and evenings, so my recommendation is to do the DMV during daytime hours.. it was a snap here in CT... so no problems!!! Oh and they took my CDN drivers licence.. i never got it back.

Oh thank you so much for the information on the CT DL, I thought I would have to do a test or something. So just an eye test. Now did you have to show that you had valid CT insurance as well? They took your Canadian DL? Are you from Ontario? or another province? I just wondered if it varied from province to province? I was hoping to keep my Ontario DL!

I didn't have to show proof of insurance that I can remember.. just proof of residency.. WE did take proof of insurance though, and I would again I think.. you can never be too safe..

I'm from PEI.. I never asked for the licence back.. I'm sure you could try! I was just glad to get out of the DMV!! :) Tee hee..

Well, I can tell you from having worked in a Registry in Alberta that it was illegal there to have more than one driver's licence, even an old expired one. People would get pulled over and fined for it all of the time. The reason is exactly as Marilyn pointed out, they're super suspicious, cause DL's can be quite easy to replicate, duplicate, etc..depending on where you go.

Wouldn't you have to go back to Ontario to have your name changed on your DL? I don't think that's something that you can do by mail. Well, at least in Alberta everything had to be done in person. That's just my two cents. I'm not sure if it helped, but all I know is that here in Idaho I have to go through the testing all over again! UGH! :(
