Yo, hipsters

My second laser printer in five years has just croaked. It's a Samsung 2010 that worked pretty well for the last two years, and suddenly I started getting a cryptic message about an LSU error. Apparently this is the laser scanning unit and not a good sign. The printer starts to suck in the paper, but then stops in its tracks and deletes the job.

The printer I had before that was a Samsung 1210. It worked pretty well for a while, and then one day it stopped sucking in the paper. A friend of mine was able to fix it temporarily by replacing a rubber thing inside. It prints OK but with marks all over the paper. Because I do some proofreading for publishers, I need to be able to print out clean copies to mark up and send back, so that's no good.

I'm probably not going to buy another Samsung! Both of the aforementioned printers were relatively cheap, but it's still a pisser to have to replace a laser printer every two years! Here are my basic criteria for a new printer:

(1) Must be laser, monochrome OK

(2) I'm willing to spend up to $300. This is reasonable, right?

It seems that inexpensive printers nowadays are more or less disposable. At my last job, I had an ancient HP that weighed about 25 pounds. I think its top printing speed was 8 PPM, but it was indestructible and generated nice clean documents.

Any suggestions?

We have the Epson Stylus 6600 which comes with a scanner. I like it a lot bot I am not sure of the price..I think it is about two years old now, so there is probably already a newer model on the market.
