If early voting is any sign, turnout is expected to be significantly higher than usual in today’s West Virginia primary, a Democratic party official said.

Tom Vogel, the executive director of the West Virginia Democratic Party, said today that early voting was twice as large as in previous elections. More than 45,000 people cast their ballots early.

“So that’s a very positive sign,” Mr. Vogel said, adding that the good weather across the state should also allow for a high turnout. “It’s a little cool, but we’ve got sunshine and no bad weather. We expect a very good turnout.”

Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. at all 1,965 precincts, and will remain open until 7:30 p.m.

Jason Williams, the manager of the elections division at the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office, said the turnout in the 2004 primary election was 39 percent of registered voters. Today, he expects turnout to reach between 50 and 60 percent.

“So far, most of the county clerks are reporting an average turnout for the primary, but we anticipate a surge early in the day as people are coming home from work,” he said. “And with early voting so high, we do anticipate that to translate into higher turnout throughout the day.”

Mr. Williams said there are several hotly contested local elections that could also factor into increased voter turnout.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will hold an evening election-night rally in Charleston, W.V., while Senator Barack Obama will be campaigning in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

There are 28 delegates up for grabs in WV today. Obama picked up about as many superdelgates druing the last week which will more than compensate any delegate gain Hillary will have today in WV.

The WV surge for Hilary can be summarized in four words: Too little Too late.

Hell, even Carville says that he thinks Obama will be the nominee.

Just watch her try to spin today's victory as a sign that Obama will have trouble in November. All someone needs to say to Hillary - "Hey Hillary! What percentage of the WV did McCain get?" :P

The only way she's going to go away is if we elect her President twice and let her term limit the fukc out.

It's the only way this fair planet will ever be rid of her!

I hear there's a shuttle scheduled to depart soon. Perhaps she should be persuaded to campaign in FL at that time? Close to the Coconut Beach area. Load her up and get her gone off the planet. Now that's a solid plan around the scary prospect you put up there.

That was a faux caucus and didn't reflect the poplular vote at all. The WV Republican Party pulled a switcheroo this year and seated delegates three months before the primary so they could be the first to show a vote on Super Tuesday.

If there was a fight right now to seat the GOP nominee like there is for the Democrats, these delegates would probably be as contentious as Michigan and Florida.

Ah, ok. Very interesting. Still, at least it shows that when McCain was up against Huckabee and Romney, he fared poorly, which makes the argument that Hillary is trying to make (that Obama can't beat McCain in WV) a bit weak.
