Campaign Funding and Spending: The Numbers

For Hillary to portray herself as the underdog and simply being outspent by Obama as if it has given him a clear advantage over her is laughable when you look at how much both candidates have raised vs. how much they've spent. His campaign has just done a better job on not going in the red.

Hillary Clinton (D)

Senator from New York

Although Clinton emerged from last year as the top fundraiser of either party, she has fallen behind opponent Barack Obama in the first part of this year. Obama is consistently raising more, sometimes doubling her monthly total. In January Clinton was forced to loan her campaign $5 million to keep up with Obama's advertising in early primary states and now her campaign is focusing its efforts more on how to use the Internet to appeal to new and small donors.

Total Receipts: $189,097,053

Total Spent: $157,384,855

Cash on Hand: $31,712,197

Debts: $15,321,562

Barack Obama (D)

Senator from Illinois

2008 boosted Obama into the position of the most successful fundraiser, as he continues to pull ahead of Hillary Clinton in the money race every month. He seems to be having no problem appealing to new donors, either. In 2007 he's been raising more than $1 million a day, largely thanks to small online donors. Despite Obama's fundraising success, the two Democrats remain in a tight race for both superdelegates and delegates

Total Receipts: $234,745,081

Total Spent: $183,671,081

Cash on Hand: $51,073,999

Debts: $662,784
