why is America the only country these persecuted people can find asylum? Why do we OWE them asylum??

You get the memo? It's always America's fault.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

It's not the only country where people can find asylum, but offering asylum to those who are persecuted is one of the most important things democratic countries can offer those abused in their own countries. It is something like a humanitarian duty. So, I do think we owe people asylum.

That being said, I'm very much against granting asylum to people who want to come for economic reasons. I can see their motivation in claiming asylum, such as there's no other way to legally enter the US due to lack of visas, but that is just plain wrong.

to be gay in our country is to inhabit a true second class, devoid of the option of partner benefits, immigration options, and generally adoption( excepSF and some other areas)...I believe that we are born into our sexuality...How terrible to have no rights to bring our same sex partner o live wih us, simply because of bias. It is terrible to be in such a marginalized situation without the option of reuniting with a partner fron overseas. I am grateful to have been born into a situation of privildge, that of being heterosexual. We are engaed in a grave injusice

I completely agree with you. I know someone who is in a similar situation, the only thing is that she isn't a USC or permanent resident, but holds a G4 visa.

I get a little upset when people say that homosexuality is a choice. Deciding what pair of pants to put on is a choice...I don't think a lot of people would willingly choose to be ostracized and many times killed because of their sexual preferences.

Exactly. It's not that it's easy being LBGT in a society like ours and I don't know any person within that group who would have chosen their sexual preference.
