I've been telling my fiancee to just bring her most treasured items because we can replace things such as clothing, music, etc. (except Tagalog music of course, hehe).

Pirated DVD's? I doubt they are going to look that hard, but I say better safe than sorry.

I am a USC. I have brought canned fish into the US two sepreate times with no problems. However, I have always declared it. The first time the officer asked, "do you have balut? my answer was no. He said that is not allowed. The second time my luggage got a special investigation, but was allowed to keep all of my imported items. There are Asian stores in nearly every area. I will tell my wife not to bring any when she comes. It is just another thing to have them consider at the POE. Best Wishesj&J

First time immigrants (first time to fly to US too) are always discouraged to bring one thing too many because you wouldn't want to carry anything that may worry you at your POE. If you really want to bring your mother's special shrimp paste/fish paste, you can try, just make sure it is in a safely sealed, non-fragile, clear container (so that they can see what's inside). If it so happens that you'll be asked about it, tell them the truth.

Good luck!

The US immigration is very very strict on agriculture and other foods that you may have. You will be given a form (usually distributed on the plane) which will ask you if you bring any plants, food, etc etc and if you answered yes to that, you might have to be referred to the baggage re-check. However, if you chose to answer no to those questions and still referred to the re-check, which is random by the way, they will find out what you had in there and that might be a cause for several questions. I brought with my several signature items, but only in minimal, and it was a risk that I took. They were not too many as they were for my personal use, they are very strict on bringing items to be sold and you need to declare them in customs. Fortunately, I was only referred to the "B" section, which is the Admissibilty Review and didn't have to go to the baggage re-check. I hope this enlightens you...
