Exactly. OT is becoming a de facto political forum.

My view is that if we split off the politics into a dedicated forum we'll broaden the range of O/T topics, and perhaps provide something a bit more social that draws in some of the members who are otherwise put off O/T because of the preponderance of divisive topics...

The divisive topics can continue in their own area - and lets face it... its the same hard-core of members who are involved in them.

Couldn't agree more. As it stands, there's really no point in posting in a non-politicky off-topic post right now, as it will have hit page 3 within the hour.

Yep - I think its only fair to give some consideration to the rest of the membership. As much as many of us (myself included) enjoy participating in the aforementioned divisive topics.

I mean all threads of an overtly political nature, not just the election. The election has added to it - but there have always been people suggesting that we split off the O/T forums.

Ok. Sticking with the same list, how many are political? I count 4 that are clearly political, 9 that are clearly not political, and 2 that could be political.

I don't buy it. The political topics come in spurts, yes, but to argue that the silly threads or the personal threads do not and have not always predominated is silly and, frankly, disingenuous.

Will anyone object to me making 5 or 6 American Idol threads every day? I really would like to have a daily thread for *each* of the contestants still in the competition.

Personally. I don't really care whether or not they dominate.

I do think that they introduce a level of negativity that precludes too many new people from participating.

I also think that the vote should carry the decision - as it has on previous occasions when this has been suggested.
