I wouldnt pay either. Where I go it is free. They have a weightroom where my son does his Karate (and I am good friends with Master Sensei) and I sometimes go to the community center. Sometimes my brother wants me to work out with him so he drags me along to his posh expensive members only gym.

Nor can you stop if a bear is chasing you

The only thing I hate hiking in the mountains is coming back down which is very painful to my bad knee. Going up I like but hiking back down is very very painful and my knee starts to swell.

Have you tried hiking poles? They reduce the load on the knees by a fair bit (15%ish?) and increase the overall workout too which I found odd but it does work.
