I am still confused about the vaccination part. Although I posted and got some response, I am not satisfied since there seems to be a regional differentiation in the list of vaccinations required. As on today (January 2008) according to the info on vaccinations posted at New Delhi US consulate (which is link to http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1331.html) the new vaccination requirements (applicable to all US embassies in India) are:

-- mumps

-- measles

-- rubella

-- polio

-- tetanus and diphtheria toxoids

-- pertussis

-- influenzae type b (Hib)

-- hepatitis B

-- varicella

-- pneumococcal and

-- influenza.

Also it follows that it is not mandatory for K1 visa applicants to get the vaccinations, but it is advised to do it since

a) it would be cheap

B) it is required later as compulsory for AOS

c) we can plan it now when we have time and also take care of any after effects

d) it would save time at AOS timeline

Further from this forum, I also gathered the following

a) Those who already have vaccination records, please keep them ready/preserve them

B) those undergoing vaccination, make it a point to get some documentation/proof of vaccination from the place vaccination is done

c) inform the panel doctor during your medical visit of all the vaccinations done and make it a point to request him to note them in the medical document he attests/declares.

d) vaccinations can be done anywhere, not necessarily from those listed in the Consulate website

Now my request for all those Indians who have gone through the vaccinations/medical phase and also to those who are presently planning to go for vaccinations/medicals to post their vaccination experiences. This will help all of us who are in waiting. Also this thread then could become single point of general information on vaccinations thus saving time and frustration.

Thanks

Finished my medicals. Went to Chennai Lister Lab early in the morning at 8AM. I took a local train from Park station which is opposite Chennai Central (you have to go through the subway to reach it). Got a ticket for Rs.4 to Nungambakkam. Reached there in 5 min! Then got an auto for Rs.20/- and went to Jagannath Road. Went to test centre of Lister (fourth building from report building). They are in the process of migrating to the new building which comes first in the lane. Finished my tests by 9:00. They took X-ray and drew some blood for HIV and CPR (syphilis?). Charged 800/-. Got the receipt after finishing the tests.

Then tracked down Dr.Sanjan John's clinic at Chetpet junction right side road leading to Kilpauk. It is near to the Lister Lab. I went by foot since there was lot of time. It took me good 25 minutes to get there since I was asking for directions. Told the nurse/attendent there that I had a train at 6PM and would like to get the checkup done quickly in the evening. She was courteous and took all the details.

Then went back to Lister lab and waited there till 4:00 PM, got my report and went to Dr.John's clinic. He went through the sealed cover, prepared his report and told me not to seal/close the report, make a copy of the complete set and keep it alongwith X-ray. He instructed me to submit the original reports (unsealed) at the time of interview (san X-ray). He didn't even look at the vaccination records I submitted. He said they are not necessary/required for K1 and filled the vaccination sheet accordingly i.e, as "not applicable". He charged 700/-. Then I quickly walked to the Chetpet local station (10 min walk) and caught a train to Park station.

Overall the experience was good. The auto-rickshaw guys were the worst. One needs to bargain a lot. Since I am not good at it, I just got away in a huff and walked all the way! For those who are going to have their medicals at Chennai, I suggest go for Dr.John.

Cheaper to get the vaccination done in India, one important thing, MAKE SURE you get a copy of the report of the vaccination and exams.

When filing for AOS, i included the report with the rest of the paperwork, I read a few stories where people get RFE for vaccination request and some also for medical exams even though they had already completed as part of the K1.

So by having a copy of it, you are saving yourself some heartache and funds by not having to go through it again.
