Hi everyone...I have a question wasn't sure where to post it.

My inlaws have been staying with my husband and I since September and they will be leaving in January. Obviously we have incurred many additional expenses. Does anyone know if you can claim an international visitor as a dependant? I'm thinking maybe they haven't stayed long enough to qualify but there is talk of longer visits in the future , for example if they are given 6 months again as they were this time, they may just stay the entire 6 months.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

I never heard of reporting in-laws as tax deductions, my suggestion is to call the IRS and ask for a tax specialist. I did, just to find out how the heck we are going to file this year and found that they were very helpful. At a minimum your in-laws will need tax ID numbers.

Regards,

David and Nitadyah

no you can't.

Check out the instructions to the 1040 to see who qualifies as dependents. Also you have to suport them for the majority of the year.

Actually I did read the instructions before posting this question but there was no mention about international visiors or time periods, I thought someone here may have some experiance with this.

??

Im sure it didnt...nor did it mention distant cousins, and relatives that might visit. It lists the people that may depend upon you for support. Im sure that you in-laws are self supporting...forget about it...aint gonna happen.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Actually there was some mention of supporting relatives in other countries which is why I asked, I don't see why you feel the need to be so rude. I pay my taxes just like you and I'm not "trying" to get away with something. Just seeing what my options are for now and the future if there are any. Thanks for your help :star:

By the way, you shouldnt be so sure about things, you don't know my inlaws or their financial situation.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
