It's amazing to me that despite the amount of time Germans spend in school learning about World War II and the Holocaust there is a movement of neo-Nazism.

You would think that, but there are some areas in the eastern portions of Germany where unemployment approaches or surpasses 20%. Wherever you have a lot of people sitting around with nothing to do with little hope, opportunity, lots of disillusionment and time to read garbage, that's what you get. For what it is worth, there is also a significant minority out there far flung in the other direction and long for a return of a modified communism.

In the western portion, there are certain pockets of higher than average unemployment. Gelsenkirchen is one of those places. I think I last read it was 14 or 15%. So, there too on occasional you see that kind of thing that is more prevalent in the East.

Neo-Nazism is illegal. Denying the Holocaust is illegal. Laws are enforced. From that standpoint there is not a lot more the government can do besides just give them jobs so they shut up which it obviously can't. Oddly enough, there exists a party called the NPD, which is nothing more than a thinly veiled neo-Nazi party. Screwing around on youtube, I was able to find some vids of their marches. I was surprised by the number, though I know I should have known better. I just noticed I spent a good amount of time watching NPD vs. Antifa vids. I also found an embarrassing number of US neo-Nazi vids. Great.

How much of a problem it really is, it is hard to say. In the West, where unemployment has been historically lower, probably not much. In the East, well, gosh, I wish I could find this TV news article from this village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern I think where the mayor wanted it all NPD, what I was looking for in the first place. Cookoo.

Anyway, it is only a fringe movement which is unlikely to gain any significant momentum.
