In January of 06 I was refused entry to the US as the CO did not feel I had the requisite sufficient ties to Canada -- self employed (so no boss expecting me back by a certain date), going to visit the GF for a month (flying down, driving back), living at the family home (so no lease or rental agreement). As a self-employed individual it's always been a hassle, even before I met and started dating my sig. other.

I was instructed to return with proof of ties to Canada, which I did, and was subsequently admitted and have continued to be admitted ever since then with no problems.

There were only three times subsequent when I was sent in for "additional screening". I presented the support documents every time and was allowed through, but twice I was issued an I-94 Arrival/Departure record to make sure I left the country when I said I was going to (and of course did).

[if they'd issued me an I-94 the first time there wouldn't be an issue but that's beside the point]...

So, the million dollar question is this: on the DS-156 it asks if I was ever refused a visa -- owing to the special relationship between our two countries, Canadians do not require them (and there was no corresponding selection with the online form anyway), so would I indicate I was never denied a visa?.

[i am aware I will have to indicate elsewhere I was denied entry once, as they're bound to have that info anyway and will have to talk to a consular officer to clarify that.]

I was denied entry to the US (twice) I answered yes, I was denied a Visa.

Technically B2 is a Visa. Tourist Visa.

I had no problem at the Interview- many people do get denied because of lack of ties.

I indicated both. For the Have you ever been refused entry to the US question- I answered yes and wrote the reasons why on a separate page and attached it to the application.

For the "Have you ever been refused a Visa"- I answered Yes and when it said "What type of Visa?" I wrote B2. It seemed logical to me to answer yes to that one. I was never told at the Interview that I answered it wrong.

I was asked about the denials at the interview and told him- lack of ties to Canada. He said it happens often and moved on to the next question.

I got my Visa.
