I'm a long time lurker here who just received his package from the consulate and is already scratching his head.

Where it says to list all previous visits to the US, obviously I can cover it back to when I met my (now) fiancee in 2002

But what about years previous?

As a Canadian who has lived all his life close to the border there have been many visits; day trips, vacations etc, from about the age of 6 to 34. I know I can put down "Prior to above, numerous trips during my lifetime to the US including day shopping trips, weekend trips and vacations of 1 to 3 weeks" etc.

The thing that has me confused though is this:

I lived in the USA from 1985-1986, as per my father's 1-year loan assignment to a company in Greensboro North Carolina. I attended grade 7 there. Under his work visa myself, my mother and sister were covered and we returned to Canada in August 1986. I never lived in the US since.

Now, will they want to know that, given:

1. It was 22 years ago

2. It happened well outside meeting my fiancee some 16 years later.

3. I was a minor at the time and had no choice in the matter.

My mother has been having a devil of a time getting her Canadian old age pension sorted out because of that one year we lived in the US.

I can just picture my honest reporting to monkeywrench the works.

Any help would be appreciated!

I attached a letter stating that I had visited the U.S. numerous times, too many to mention individually, from the time I was a child to the present for shopping, vacations, etc. I also listed the states I had visited. It seemed to suffice because I never heard another thing about it after that.

I think it's just understood that Canadians visit the U.S. frequently, being as we don't need visas to do so, and especially if you live near the Canada/US border (as I did).

Good luck.

When in doubt, always follow the instructions to the letter. Raymaga's suggestion seems sound if you can't remember exact dates.

My concern right now is more to do with the aforementioned year of legal residence in the USA from 85-86. I've looked over the site and haven't found anything that would pertain to a situation like it.

It was such a long time ago but I doubt USCIS has a statute of limitations on something like that (even though we're only required to have a background check/places of residence from age 16 onward).
