My husband and I went to DMV today and trying to register my vehicle. We didn't have to pay the duty when importing the vehicle at the boarder (K1).

Do we have to pay any tax for the registration then? Is there any exemption for the tax anyone has heard of?

We are in North Dakota by the way :)

Thank you very much! Have a great day :)

each state is different. here in virginia we have to pay personal property tax annually and then at the county level, we have to pay a decal fee annually.

i would search here and find out what is required of you to register your vehicle. this won't have anything to do with immigration and i doubt they would waive any tax because the vehicle was imported - because they are completely different government entities.

Thank you very much Val Erie for your reply! :)

My husband just called and asked for a clarification on their manual:

Vehicles brought into the state of North Dakota by a non–resident, establishing a residence in this state, if the vehicle was not expressly purchased for use within the state of North Dakota (30–day provision applies).

The wording gave us a little hope but when he called the main branch DMV in Bismarck, ND, the super nice lady on the phone told him some states (Alaska) and Canada were excluded, so... Yep, still have to pay the excise tax T_T (They should have mentioned it clearer at the manual). Anyway... we'll go to the DMV at Fargo, ND again tomorrow and pay. Then file a complain about the disrespectful services we got from the supervisor there! ;)

I wonder is DMV around the States have bad customer services? I don't see a very good review online :P

i think if there is any sentiment that covers every state's dmv - it's poor customer service!
