I had my medical yesterday so thought I would share the experience for those who have it soon.

I had to fly down from Edinburgh so took an Easyjet flight to London Luton, then hopped on the train to St Pancras. I arrived at 10am and walked from St Pancras to Knightsbridge Doctors (Bentick Mansions) to find out where it was, then went to a coffee house around the corner to waste the time until my appointment at 1pm.

I rang the buzzer, went in, and was greeted by the receptionist staff who were pleasant but seemed overly busy. I was handed a form to fill in, I went to the waiting area, filled out the form and then returned this to the receptionist who then took my passport, police certificate, photo and vaccination record and directed me back to the waiting room.

About 10 minutes later I was called upon by a dark haired nurse, who led me to the room at the top of the corridor. We talked briefly about my situation and what would happen during my appointment before going over my vaccination records. The nurse immediately put me at ease, was friendly and explained that I would need to get a tetanus injection, although being a K1 applicant I could wait and get this done on the NHS back home. I opted to get it done there and then was shown back to the waiting area. I was in the room for about 5 minutes.

A couple minutes later the x-ray nurse (shorter, chatty man) led me to the x-ray room. I took my shirt off and had my x-ray. I asked to see the x-ray however was advised they were too busy and couldn’t. I was shown back to the waiting room. Again, was in the room less than 5 minutes.

Around 5-10 minutes later I was called by the medical nurse (Scandinavian accent?) who explained what she was going to be looking for and testing. First my height and weight were taken and then I was asked to take my shirt off and sit on the bed. I did, and my blood pressure and pulse were taken. I then had my blood test (a bit of a surprise as I was expecting this last!) which was fine, just nipped a little.

Then the eye test, then checked my eyes, throat and ears. Then asked me to strip down to my underwear only and to lie on the bed. The nurse then gave me the once over, including a genital check, including checking for cancer. I was in the room for 10-15 minutes tops.

I was then shown back to the waiting area for about 2 minutes while the receptionist staff checked all my documents before calling me through to pay the £236 (medical plus vaccination) and I was out by 1:45 pm.

My general thoughts were that although the medical was fine, the staff seemed very busy and the whole set up seems to be geared around getting the most people through the door as possible and that the decor could be improved bearing in mind that it is a private medical facility.

I then took the tube to Victoria, took the Gatwick express to Gatwick and flew back home! Another step closer!

It's funny, I thought something similar, but figured that with all the immigration business they have no reason to prettify themselves to appeal to consenting paying clients. But actually, it's not allll that different from many doctors' offices over here, which are all private...

And actually, given the fee one has to pay, I'm kind of glad there wasn't any marble to make me think part of the fee was going to décor

My fiancee looked at it as a necessary step and found it fine. He also had a doctor training another and was talkative, so his experience may have been a bit more pleasant.

I had my medical a while ago now, but I'm just wondering, what exactly were we checked for in our blood tests and x-rays? I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so it would be reassuring to find out what I dont have! Does anyone know? They never told me.

I had my medical a while ago now, but I'm just wondering, what exactly were we checked for in our blood tests and x-rays? I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so it would be reassuring to find out what I dont have! Does anyone know? They never told me.

I asked the Dr while I was in the room. She told me that the blood test is for Syphilis and that they used to test for HIV but don't anymore.
