Comments : They sent a request for more information on 6/3/2011. I had not sent in nearly enough documentation (had only sent some photos, a few affidavits, one or two things listing our address, and some vacation itineraries).

Further information was due to USCIS by 7/18/2011. I sent back an absolute mountain of stuff - every bank statement since we were married, phone bills, life insurance, health insurance, car insurance, taxes, a personal letter, etc. I mailed that package 7/13/11, it was signed for at USCIS on 7/15/11.

The next thing I heard from them was my case status email update letting us know the new card was being mailed 7/29/11!!

Event Description

Embassy Review : First of all, we were told from different sources that Megan could or could not go with Paul to the interview - we called and they said I could go, so I flew over for 5 days. The interview was the day before I left.

Queued for a hour or two (in the freezing cold!) until we finally got in the building. I had a birthday card that played music in my bag (part of our evidence) and we were required to check it at the door - I guess it looked like a potential bomb? Went in, got a number. It was like a bank, with windows and "tellers". There were screens posting the next number being called, like at the DMV. We sat and waited for about an hour - our number was called and we got so excited - went up to the window and all they did was take Paul's x-rays and fingerprints and the folder with our forms and told us to go sit down again.

We sat down again for about 20 minutes, then our number was called again. So weird because you think they're going to take you into a room, but they don't - you're just standing at a window like you're at the bank. The guy was very nice, and he only asked us about 3 questions (how did you meet, how long have you known each other, why do you want to live in the U.S.) and then we had to take an oath and then he said our visa was approved! We couldn't believe how anticlimactic it all was. We had spent hours putting together photo albums, compiling letters, phone bills, etc. and he didn't look at any of it.

As an aside, you have to leave your U.K. passport with them for them to put your visa in. So if you are planning to fly back home (like to Newcastle or Manchester) - double check with the airline and make sure you have an alternate form of ID. Paul almost wound up having to take the train!

Paul's visa arrived about a week later, inside his passport!
Rating : Very Good

Embassy Review : Came over with my mother. After getting off the plane, we got in the line for non-US passport holders. The gentleman opened my sealed packet. He was training someone and explaining the major things to look for: drug convictions, etc. He said if there's a drug conviction that's an immediate rejection. I didn't have anything on my police report, so I got through OK. Once that was fine, they just approved my visa and stamped it.

They weren't particularly unfriendly, it was very quick, we didn't go into a different room, it was all just done at the regular customs desk. Very uneventful!
Harassment Level : Low

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
