Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : January 16, 2020
Embassy Review : Our appointment was for 7am, we arrived at the embassy at around 5:30 and there were a lot of people already.

For the immigrant applicants, there are two rows, we were told by the other applicants that one was for 7am and the other was for 8am, this turned out to be false when I asked one of the officials in the building so I got in the shortest line. There’s a lot of misinformation being spread between the applicants so make sure you go ask somebody actually working there.

I’m assuming by 6-6:30 (we didn’t have the time since we can’t have our phones), they started letting people in, and as expected, they took people from both rows equally regardless of their appointment time or what line they were in.

We were one of the first ones to enter the building and got the ticket 011 after I (the beneficiary) was asked for my birth certificate, police certificate, and other papers y’all should know about. (We had no affidavit of support but this was not required for our specific case, more on that later).

When we were asked to sit and wait for our interview, we thought we’d be called in order, but they call the numbers randomly, we were 011 and they called as far as 085 while we were still sitting (jumping several numbers, of course). That was a little bit of a frustrating experience but we got to see how the other interviews were handled before ours.

Some people were asked for Affidavit of Support, from what we noticed, it was mostly people attending the interview with kids, some interviews were long and others as short as one single question.

Every case differs greatly from the other, so just focus on your specific case and don’t get too excited/scared with other people’s results.

For our interview, the consul was very nice and asked a few simple questions regarding how we met, when we started dating, how many times my fiancé visited me in Santo Domingo, he asked if I have family in the USA (which I do), asked who took the first step, and even asked what our favorite food is (asked me about his and vise-versa).
We were not asked for any papers during the actual interview, he had our entire packet next to him while interviewing us; but like I said, every case is different and we did see people being asked for papers during the interview. We also took the precaution of having the papers with us (the ones about the bona fide relationship).

It took him a little to give us an answer while he edited some notes, he told us there was nothing to worry about, and after a while of awkward silence, he told us our visa was approved and congratulated himself too because it was the first K1 visa that he approved.

We were out of the building before 9:30am.

Overall a very pleasant experience, a little frustrating only while we were waiting to get into the building and to be called for the interview.

Hi guys.... I've been aware of your progress as like your petition, we had RFE and had to resubmit with further evidence and thought things would never get done. But don't fret (I know that's easy to say) because we are now together in India and going for interview tomorrow at the Consulate 12/12. So hang in there and congrats on getting your NOA2 and moving on from there. Soon you will be having your interview as well and God willing, all will be granted and you will spend a wonderful life together. Our best, Chip and Neelesh

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
