Hey Peet - wondering how the process has been going so far in Hong Kong?? Smooth?
Peet89 on 2019-12-09 said:
It's been pretty smooth, I-130 was sent to Nebraska which takes ages, but i filed for I-129F and got approved within 3 weeks of receiving it. NVC approved my documents within 4 days of receiving it and my interview date was 3 weeks after NVC approval. My interview is tomorrow morning at the consulate. Definitely file I-129F if you haven't yet.

Great to hear and all the best tomorrow! I don't think the 129f will help me since I have an IOE receipt - at least it hasnt helped anyone with IOE so far, but perhaps it would at least give me an earlier date I could call and chase if they don't deny first.

Thanks! I see, I didn't have a IOE receipt number, but definitely try file the I129F, it's free to file and might help speed up the process! Good luck with your application, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Hi i have a similar timeline and my husband’s I-130 just got approved. May I know if both of you live in Hong Kong? We both live here now and I just read the next step of affidivit of support I need to be in the US and have a job? Its impossible for us to do that because we have young kids there and would like to move back as a family. Wondering if anyone is of a similar case. Thanks!

We both did live in Hong Kong until I received my immigrant visa. The way we got around the affidavit of support was to ask my father in law to be a co-sponsor for me. If co-sponsoring is not an option for you I would suggest having a decent amount of money in a US bank account. Another thing you should really be focusing on is proving your domicile in the US especially since you’re still living in HK. You should have a paper trail of communication with realtors, shipping companies, schools etc. where you stare you’re planning on moving to the US in the very near future. If you can somehow have bills with your name on it in the US that would be very beneficial too. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with :)

Thank you!! I am soooo happy to finally find someone sharing the same relationship status! I only have my aunts, uncles and cousins living in the US now. Can they co-sponsor? If so, do I have to apply anything to declare their relationship? I just cancelled all my bank accounts a few years ago! So should I open up an account and set up those paper trail as you said before which stage of my application? We are waiting for the NVC letter now. Do you also know roughly how much is a “decent amount” in a US account? I am not sure how to transfer a big chunk of money over suddenly either. Sorry for the questions, but with the recent outbreak in Hong Kong, we are just anxious to move, but it seems a hiccup for us all of a sudden!

Glad I can help, it’s a tricky process especially if both people are living abroad. You will be the main sponsor for the I-864 and then anyone can be a co-sponsor, it doesn’t have to necessarily be a family member. At the visa interview they will ask you who the co sponsor is and you’ll have to provide financial support documents - W2, and tax returns. We submitted 3 years but 1 year should do. My wife opened a Chase account but the officer at the interview said that doesn’t count towards proving domicile. You should start working on the paper trail now, after NVC things happen really quickly. I’m not sure what would qualify as a decent amount but you should be able to find it on the forum or on the government site, it also depends how many beneficiaries there are. At my interview they mentioned that having a car or proof that you’ll be renting a car will also count towards proving domicile. We got a quote and email correspondence with Sevens Seas logistics company, emails with a realtor and a letter from my father in law stating that we’ll be residing with them when we initially move to the US. If you want to shift money from HK to the US use the website/app called TransferWise. It charges a very nominal fee to send money across. It’s been super useful for us. Usually takes 3-4 days for the money to reach tour US account. Please don’t hesitate to send me more questions, I did a lot of research on this process and would gladly help out where I can.

Thank you! I have a friend doing real estate there. Maybe i will start connecting with her now. How long does it take from approval of I130 to the stage of interview? Did you immediately proceed with each step? As we have two kids, I can fly there to open bank accounts all of a sudden. But I did really check with my aunt if we could live with her a year ago and also joined some facebook groups to ask about schools also months ago. Do they count? Also, you move immediately after approval? I am really not sure how to plan ahead/in parallel everything. I always thought we could just wait for the approval then start to plan but it doesnt look like it now! Seems theres a deadline to move there once visa approved? We also have property to sell in order to move money around. Did you have this issue too? I still havent receieved the actual notice of approval bh mail. Not sure if it got lost or its because of the post office delay due to epidemic. I tried to request for the notice again online but they insist i put in my state and zip code! I dont have one since I live here! All these steps makes me nervous in doing something wrong. Anyways thanks again for your help!

Sorry i meant i can’t go there to open a bank account suddenly

It took me 3 months to receive my visa after I-130 was approved. I submitted all my documents and paid all my fees as soon as I could. You can open a bank account online. Joining a FB group won’t be enough evidence, you’ll have to have email correspondence. You have 6 months after the visa is approved to enter the US. I changed my correspondence address to my father in laws’ address to receive my notices but they’re not crucial, you’ll receive an email to let you know when you can start the next step.

May i ask after i130 approved, how long did it take to get the notice for the next step? I saw it approved online almost a month ago and got nothing in the mail and am getting worried. Or does it take a month for it to transfer to NVC?

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
