Consulate Review: London, United Kingdom
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 18, 2016
Embassy Review : Its very hard not to be worried and nervous even though all the reviews tell you not to be - and my review is no different!
Arrived at the US Embassy, London at 10.40am for my 1200pm K1 visa interview appointment. A friendly British security lady allowed me in to the airport style security hut at 10.45am, where I entered the main building at 10.50am and at the main reception, I was given the number I-902.
Up a few stairs on the left, I was then ushered to the front of a huge waiting area that was packed with people, applying for various other visas I presume. I was too nervous to do anything but watch the screen and occasionally glance at the other applicants around me.
Number I-901 was called at 11.10am and my I-902 was called at 11.20am. I had to go to booth 13. As warned from earlier reviews, just ignore the queue and go straight to booth 13.
A very friendly and helpful British woman asked me for the letter sent to me from the US Embassy which had included a copy of our approved I-129F, my passport, a passport size photo which she scanned and gave back, birth certificate, police certificate and affidavit of support form. I had been advised by the screen in the waiting room to only give the paper(s) that were asked for. My fingerprints were also taken. I was told to take a seat and wait to be called again. This took about 5 minutes. I felt clammy from nervous tension so went to the restrooms to freshen up thinking I had plenty of time before being called again - wrong!
I felt I had only just sat down in the main waiting area when my number was flashed again. I honestly thought that this would be where they would ask for supporting evidence for the Affidavit of Support, which I had but had not handed over at booth 13 as it wasn't asked for. The time was 11.40am.
This time I had to go to booth 14 and was greeted by a lovely American lady, who asked me to place my fingers on the screen for I.D. (they have your passport from the earlier session) I was taken by surprise as I really wasn't expecting this to be "the interview"!!
She proceeded to give me back my police certificate, birth certificate and x-ray disc from the medical while asking me some questions....
Where did we meet?
We had been together a long time, why now? I replied because his ex-wife had only just given him a divorce.
Since we had lived on a sailboat and travelled to 40 countries, she asked if we had sailed around the world, and I replied no, only 3/4 way round!
The bit I was dreading was when they asked what I was doing in Greece, which is where we met. I had been unable to get a police report from the Greek Embassy who told me I had to apply in person in Athens, something I did not do. However, when I handed over the copy of the email I had received from them, I was asked if I had ever had a Greek passport - no, only a work permit. She said "bare with me for a moment" as she typed away and then said ok. And that was that, all my months of worrying over my lack of police clearance from Greece was over!
All the other countries we had visited were on tourist visas which was ok.
She next asked where my fiancee was at that time and when I replied she asked me where exactly as she was unfamiliar with the West Coast as she was from the East Coast.
She asked how much he earned and this was when I gave her a copy of the 2015 tax return. She glanced at it and then returned it and said I would need it for the when I got to the States (this didn't sink in!!!)
She then asked if he had a house and I replied no, an RV.
Last question - what will you do when you get to the States? I gulped and replied, get married and set up home together. She laughed and said "one that doesn't move!" And that was it - Approved!!
To make sure I understood that I had actually been given a green light to go, I asked what kind of envelope to expect when I received my passport and package to be given to the immigration officer at my POE. She very kindly obliged and showed me a mock up of what to expect. All good (and I received exactly as she showed me)
I was out the building at 11.50am, 10 minutes before my actual appointment time.
Everything went so smoothly and everyone I came into contact with couldn't have been nicer or more helpful and friendly.
Good luck to all!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
