Consulate Review: South Africa
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 27, 2015
Embassy Review : Stood outside the Johannesburg Consulate waiting until 13h00. Had to park at the Sandton City Shopping centre parking. The same shopping centre where the medical is done with Dr Hoosen, did the medical a week before on the Thursday and Friday (smooth sailing).

I was issued a ticket on entry to the building in the order that we queued, don't bother bringing your phone with, you have to leave it with security anyway. You can take wallet and keys in. You sit in the waiting area until your number is called and the person at the teller asks for your passport, Unabridged Birth Certificate, I-134 (Affidavit of Support) {They do take co-sponsors if the petitioner does not earn enough} and any proof of relationship (Photos, Messages and Flight details), they didn't ask me for the letter of No Impediment. Also she had to scan both my hands (Finger Prints). Along the way she asks when/where we met and both our addresses.

The lady gave me some papers that I had to read about domestic violence and and the laws of the K1 VISA and a piece of paper indicating the amount I had to go pay the cashier around the corner. 265 Dollars. You can pay by credit card.

Once I had paid, I sat down again and waited to see the Officer, makes you put your right hand up swear you are telling the truth and scans your right fingers again. The officer asked some other basic questions, handed back all my documentation except for my Passport and medical documents the doctor sent to them. I was approved and had to contact DHL about collecting/receiving the package and my passport which supposedly would take up to 5 working days.

Overall a pleasant experience that wasn't worth stressing about. I never received a "packet 3" via email I just sent them the DS-2001 (notification that I was ready), DS-160 and passport copy when I had all the available documentation. Don't need to bring too much supporting documentation for the proof of relationship, and only included one years tax returns along with wage slips for I-134.

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
