Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description

Embassy Review : Sooo ... I arrived in the Dominican Republic the early day before the interview. We spent the entire day preparing and making sure we had all of our paperwork and evidence ready. The day of the interview, we woke up around 3:00 am, said a payer, and left for the consulate around 3:30 am. We live in a small city like 40 min away from Santiago, so it was about a 2 1/2 hr drive. We arrived a around 5:40 and went quickly to get in line. There were about 70-80 people ahead of us. This made me a little anxious at first, but around 5 minutes after we arrived I could barely see the end of the line con las tantas personas que habian llegado!!!! They started to let us in around 6:10. The guards began letting people in and handing out numbers. We reached the front of the line right away and we were both in by 6:25. We got number 49. About 30 minutes after we were in, we were called to window 16 to turn in all of our documents. The man there looked very nice and kind. He did not speak much, just a little bit of small talk as I handed him the papers. He then gave us a yellow ticket and told us to proceed to window 14 to pay the $80 and then come back to him. We did just that and then he told us to go have a seat and that we would be called up again by the same number. About 20 minutes later we were called to window 15 for him to get his fingerprints taken. After we went to sit down again, I started to feel chills all over my body because I knew what was coming next. My fiancee was completely calm and he kept telling me that everything will be fine and for me not to worry. He said just leave it up to the Lord's hands! I told him "Ahora es que ahy que esperar mucho". We waited for about another 30-45 minutes and before we knew it number 49 was called to window 25! I thought I had heard wrong so I looked at the number board to make sure that it was deff us! We walked up the steps and into the room to the right and headed to the last window in there, number 25. The man looked fairly nice and compared to the other consuls we walked by. He swore us in and the first thing he said to my fiancee was "can you please spell her name here and then sign yours right below it".
Then the questions began:
To him:
Ah entrado a los Estados Unidos alguna ves?
Tienen hijos en comun?
En que trabaja su comprometida?
Cuanto tiempo lleva trabajando ahi?
Donde estudia su comprometida?
Como se llama el padre de su comprometida?
Sabe la fecha de nacimiento de su padre?

Throughout all of the questions, while my fiancee was responding, the consul kept looking at me as I was simply nodding along "yes" to every question with a smile on my face.

Then he turned to me and asked me:
How long has he been working at this current job?
How often do you travel?

He then looked through some pictures that I had sent along when we received an RFE. He said "Do you have more pictures"? I said "Claro que si!" He giggled and then high eyes opened wide when he saw me take out a bag full of pictures. He said "Please do not give me all of those. I see you have them in small packs, just give me one". I gave it to me, he quickly looked through 4-5 of them, then went back to looking at the documents he had in front of him. He saw a birth certificate of mine and asked me if it was a copy, and I said yes it is, but I have my original one here. Then he asked me for my passport. I flipped through my binder and he said "Oh muy organizatida" and I said "Si claro, siempre". I handed him my passport and he looked though the stamps and then turned to us and said...

"No tengo ninguna razon para negarles su visa." We both instanly had two huge smiles accross our faces!! Then he continued "No hemos recibido su examen medico señor, entonces tenemos que esperar que lleguen para proceeder con su visa." At that moment I looked over at my fiancee and gave him a huge kiss!! The consul just smiled and congradulated us!

I asked him "Pero todo esta bien?" and he said, "Si pero aveces se tardan mas de lo que deverian en el consultoria medico". I saw that wonderful green slip. He wrote something on it, handed it to us along with another piece of paper and said go pay DOMEX! I asked him what was the next step and he said that Domex will contact us and when they did we had to go to them with the passport in hand. The only thing that kept me a little unstill is that they returned the passport to us. I asked him if he was sure that we were supposed to keep it and he said yes, do not worry, we will contact you.

The overall experience was good. We were out a little before 9am and then went on to celebrate! We were both very excited and couldn't believe it. Now, I'm going to e-mail the embassy to make sure that the consul did not mistakenly give us back his passport, just to make sure.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
