Consulate Review: Dominican Republic

Event Description

Embassy Review : Hello Everyone,

Here is a recap of our day at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic-

Our interview appointment was for June 1 at 645am. We stay down the street at Jardines del teatro Hotel for $65 USD. It was clean and the staff was very nice. You can see the consulate from the entrance of the hotel about 1 minute walking.

We get up at 4am all documents in hand and arrive at the consulate, 2nd in line at 430am. It was all quite simple and straight forward.

Around 7am my husband is asked to show his interview letter and is then given a number. Men and women are asked to stand in separate lines in order to go through the metal detector and then be searched, a quick frisk, by security. You are then allowed into the main area where you sit until you are called to a window.

There are fans but no air conditioner. the instructions were to dress business casual and i guess that is different in different countries. most people wore jeans and sandals or sneakers. there were some that were more professional but it was not necessary. it depends on what you feel most comfortable in.

Keep in mind, it does not matter what number you have as they are called randomly and not in order. Our number comes up on the screen along with the window number where we are to go after about an hour. We go to the window and show them our ticket and the woman asks my husband for his cedula, Banco Popular receipt and passport and asked me if i was married before. Then she told my husband to go to window 13 to have his fingerprints taken. Then we go back to the waiting area.

After another hour our number come up again and my husband was asked 3 questions 1. where did we meet 2. what date were we married 3. did i have any children. She then asks for my passport. I give her my 3 passports that show my travels to DR and my name change when we were married. we were then asked to raise our right hand and were sworn in then asked to have a seat again.

Another hour passes and my husband´s name is called and he is in the bathroom!!!! We go to window 11 where the actual interview is conducted. He goes in first. By now I am so nervous! He is asked the following questions-
1. Where did you meet
2. How old is your wife
3. Where does your wife live
4. How did your wife have her daughter, natural or cesarean
5. Did we use birth control the first time we made love
6. Did your wife bring you a gift on this trip
7. Does your wife have a car
8. what color is your wife´s toothbrush
9. where does your wife work
10. what side of the bed did you sleep on last night
11. did you have sex last night
12. who took a shower first this morning

my husband then came out and they asked me in right away. the man was nice and the room was brightly light and comfortable. He asked me the same questions. i could not remember the color of the toothbrush because i was nervous and it was new! lol then we return to the waiting area. when we went back to the waiting area there was almost no one left. we waited about another 30 minutes and we were the next to the last couple called!!!! I was about to have a heart attack!

Our number comes up again and we go to another window and the woman asked my husband if he were married before then she said your interview went well and then she said wait a minute she had to asked someone a question about our case, i was leaning on my husband and he later told me that he could feel my heart beating on his back. she then said su visa ha sido approvada and i was so nervous i did not understand so i just looked at her and she looked at me and said oh, i´m sorry, your visa has been approved! she then gave us the green ticket to go to domex to pay to have visa mailed to my husband. I was so happy that i cried!

There were many people who went to the window only one time and were approved. there were many who went two times and were approved. It depends on your case. What i will say is that it was not necessary for us to arrive so early and pay attention to your interview letter because we did not need any of the documents we brought with us as i had already sent them to NVC. It did indicate that in the letter. I was just so nervous and didn´t want them to say they needed something and I didn´t have it with me.

Now we must wait for the visa to arrive. they said it could take 1-2 weeks but we are believing it will be sooner. it does not matter as i will not leave this country without my husband!

we wish you all the best journey to your visa! Good luck and God Bless!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
