We got to the Detroit office 30 minutes before our interview. They just asked us to go to a window, give our interview letter, and wait for our name to be called. We spent a few minutes waiting at the lobby and then an immigration officer called my name. He introduced himself and led us to a small office and while still standing up, asked us to raise our right hand and swear to tell nothing but the truth.
He then asked us to sit down and be comfortable. He was very nice and it felt like we were just talking to a friend. He had our file in front of him and he said he reviewed our papers before he asked us in and everything looked alright and filed properly. He just asked us to give him another copy of our marriage certificate as he can't find it.
Then he asked a few standard questions that were on the i485 form. He asked me if I belong to any organizations so I told him I was part of a photography organization back in the Phils. He said his wife is also into photography and I must have a lot of lenses and cameras haha. Nick said "more than enough!" we just laughed and I told the officer, "yeah, I know what I want for Christmas". Nick was explaining to him how I wanted to have this long telephoto lens and the officer laughed and said "You guys are really married"
He asked me if I was convicted, helped anyone enter the country illegaly, harbor any terrorists etc, went out of the country after I got married.. all of which I answered "no" to. He also asked me my maiden name, my birthday and my parents' first names. Then he looked at our file, mentioned the date of my arrival and the POE, mentioned the date of our marriage and said we got married a month after I arrived so we are good. He said we are approved and that we have to wait for 2 weeks for my green card to arrive and that I shouldn't go out of the country before I receive my green card. It was funny because I was bugging Nick to cross the bridge in Detroit so we can go to Canada on our way to the interview. Now, he said he has a good excuse not to take me lol. The officer said yeah it's a good idea not to go because he's going to approve my greencard and it will take effect in 2 hrs. If I go out the country, I wont be able to get back till my green card has been produced. Whew!
He asked me if I have any questions so I just asked if I can keep my EAD card since I have a job interview and he said yes. I can use it as a backup while waiting for the green card.
I also made sure that he's going to put in my correct married name and he said yes, since that is the name I signed in front of the judge (marriage certificate)
After that, he also gave us advise to start collating joint papers, taxes, insurance and keep it in an immigration folder for my removal of conditions interview after 2 yrs. He verified our mailing address and asked us how long of a drive we had to get there(it was 1.5 hrs) He said that as soon as he comes back from leading us out, he'd work on his computer to approve my green card.
Overall, it was a very good experience that took less than 10 minutes and the officer was very pleasant. He didnt look at any of the evidences we brought. On our way out I told him " That wasn't too painful" lol. He said yep, it isn't. We thanked him and he led us out the door and said "Nice meeting you two and have a good day"
