Review Topic: K1 Visa

We were scheduled to have our interview at 9:00 am. We arrived at 8:20 because I am very anal about being early and ontime. We stood in line for about 20 minutes and then were allowed inside. We went back to a very small room filled with people applying for non-immigrant and immigrant visas. Thankfully, there seemed to be a lot less people for the K-1 visa or something of that type. We sat and waited another 10 minutes, and we were called to a window where they took the payment receipt, his passport, and the DS 156, DS 156k, and the DS 157 (only for guys). Then we were told to sit down and wait. About 10:00 we were called to a small window where the lady asked us for the Police certificates, his medical exam, his birth certificate, and the I-134 Affadavits of Support. She took those and then asked us a few questions about when we met..had he been to the us, how many times had I been to Peru. Then she told us that we had failed to get his birth certificate certified by RENIEC in Lima. It was certified by the RENIEC in his hometown, but that wasn´t good enough. (THEY DON´T TELL YOU THAT SPECIFICALLY IN THE INSTRUCTIONS IN PACKET 3!!!!!!) I was almost ready to cry, but she told us that it wasn´t a problem and that we should just go do that and then send it back to the embassy. She asked for a few pictures, and I had them loose and in a baggie, which was able to pass through the little slot in the window..DON´T TAKE ALBUMS, or if you do, be prepared to quickly take them out. Then we were asked to sit down again. All of this took maybe 15 minutes. 30 minutes later he was called to go behind door 15...ahhh!!! He went in alone, but told the lady behind the glass that his fiancee was here, so I went in too. She took his fingerprints, asked us a few questions about how we met, and then said, "Well, it sounds like love!" She gave a us yellow paper that told us how to send back his passport with the certified copy of his birth certificate, and she said that we could expect his visa about a week after he sent the certificate in. We spent 4 hours that day running around Lima to get it certified and then sent it back to the embassy that same day. (With our fingers crossed we waited.)

6 days later we left the DHL in San Isidro SOOOOOOOOOO happy with the visa in hand!

***** It may not be this easy for everyone. It all depends on the people at the windows. We were very lucky that it wasn´t very difficult. We had spent the whole night before organizing every paper, asking each other tons of questions, and barely sleeping. We took tons of evidence - pictures, emails, chat logs, letters, cards, plane and bus tickets, and hotel receipts. They only looked at the pictures. I would suggest taking all that you have though, just in case!!! GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL! EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS!!!
