We were very apprehensive about the interview after reading the horror stories of people who get denied but have a real relationship.
However, we felt well-prepared and I made the trip to China to be with her during the interview time and attend the American Citizen Hour the prior week.
My impression of the embassy is that they are swamped with applications and really do not have the time to dedicate to each case that cases probably deserve, but the officer I met during ACH was pleasant and answered my questions. I met another officer who notarized something for me, and he was businesslike and a little cool, but again, I think they are always overburdened with work.
The officer that my fiancee dealt with during her interview was businesslike, not warm, but not rude. Her interview lasted about 7 minutes and he spent most of the time reviewing the photographs and reading the letter I had notarized the week prior. The questions he asked were pretty easy ones, like how many times I'd visited, how we met, etc.
In the end, she passed, and received her passport with the visa via EMS only 2 days after that. (She lives near Guangzhou)
