My fiancee Yajun and her daughter had their interview this past Friday in Guangzhou. Here is her description of it to me.
We arrived for our 7:15am appointment to find many people waiting at the consulate for their appointments. There were 2 queues, one for immigration and one for other embassy business. We followed the immigration queue and were given a number and then let inside to another waiting area.
We went through a security check where they took our cellphones and gave us another number to retrieve them later. No food or drink is allowed inside this security area. After a while our number was called and we went to a window where our forms were verified and we were given another form to fill-out, one for me and one for my daughter. We then waited about 1/2 hour until our number was called again. We were then fingerprinted.
All the people in the room were then asked to stand a give an oath that all the information submitted today was the truth. We then waited about another 1/2 hour.
We were called to window #27 by a woman that appeared to be Chinese but only spoke in English. A translator was present but left to help another window.
We stepped up to the window and both said "good morning" to her. She did not respond.
She first asked for our passports and then asked us the following questions;
- How did you and your fiancee meet?
- How many times did he come to China?
- Did he have a child?
- Where is his ex-wife?
- When was he divorced from his ex-wife?
- May I see a copy of your fiancee's passport?
- Do you have a husband?
- Where does your ex-husband live?
- Why did you and your ex-husband divorce?
- What job does your fiancee have?
She was thinking and I said to her that "I have many pictures of my fiancee and I together in China, would you like to see them?" She nodded and then looked through our book.
She then directed these questions to my daughter;
- Have you met your mother's fiancee?
- Do you like him?
- What gifts has he given to you?
She then asked me "did you daughter follow you after your divorce?"
She began looking for my divorce papers and asked me for them.
After looking at them she said "You have passed, Congratulations!"
My fiancee believes that her self-confidence and eye contact with this woman was essential in her passing. The woman kept constant eye contact on her and my fiancee matched that as much as possible. She also repeated every question back to the woman once before answering.
We are expecting her visas to be mailed within the week.
