Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Our interview experience was fairly simple. My husbands appointment was on May 1st was 8:30 am. Don’t arrive too early as they will not let you in quickly. It was pouring rain that day, so be sure to come prepared for the weather as you will initially stand in line outside. They let him in around 8:45 and checked his passport and put a sticker on the back.
He was in the consulate for about an hour, if not that. When he was called up, they took his fingerprints and checked his documents. Then proceeded to the interview portion, which only took about 5 minutes. They basically asked him about me (his spouse), where we were going to live, why we were heading there, etc. They were very straight forward questions. Unfortunately they could not issue the visa that day because we had the wrong police report. They said it was common and to simply order one and mail it in with his passport. Everything else was good to go and that he was a clear cut case.
If this does happen to you, I would recommend finding the nearest fingerprinting service and getting it done as soon as possible. We learned that the rcmp stations do not issue them out east. We were on our way to Ottawa, so we found a center there and booked an appointment that day. It costed just under $60. We made sure it would be sent to our home in Alberta.
The police report came in a week and we sent it off with his passport, passport photos, and the Notice of Refusal document. The document explains why you were refused a visa that day. At the time of the interview, they gave him a paper with instructions on what to include in the parcel and how to register his parcel online. You have to print out a document with a barcode that includes your case number so that when they receive the package, they can identify you and review your case. The instruction document explains exactly how to print that off.
I sent it via Canada post and had it expedited, though if you previously registered via courier with purolater, you can visit one of their offices and have it sent for free.
We were told to wait at least 6-8 weeks to hear from them, but we were emailed about 3-4 weeks later that his passport was being shipped back and that his visa was issued. In two days, he had his visa in his hand.
Despite the small hiccup, the process was fairly easy and he told me the people were very friendly. It was just annoying to have to do that extra step. But it was all worth it in the end. We are very excited to start this new chapter in the USA as a whole family. Good luck to all going through this, it’s all worth it.
