Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

My wife's interview started on time with no long delays. She gave her documents to the officer and answered some questions about the circumstances around our marriage and also about my late wife. Her case was then placed in 'Refused' status which actually means administrative processing. The officer kept her passport and other documents. For anyone reading this, remember to read the small print under the status. Seeing the word 'Refused' was a big (and unnecessary) scare for us. I wish they could use more precise wording. My wife also received some instructions for creating an online account to set up a delivery location for her passport. The website is buggy and it took me a while to finally set it up with spotty help from tech support. After a week or so, the status of my wife's case started updating to 'admin processing' then 'printed' then 'issued' (https://ceac.state.gov/ceacstattracker/status.aspx).

It took about 3-4 weeks total for the visa to be ready after my wife's interview. The main headache was figuring out where to pick it up. Communication from the embassy is automated and unclear. If you contact them, don't expect to receive any response from a person--just copy-paste messages and auto replies. NOTE: pick up locations for passports are handled by DHL, not the embassy. If you're not sure where your passport is, it might be helpful to contact the DHL locations directly. They're listed on https://www.ustraveldocs.com/gh/

Overall, I'm happy my wife got the visa. Confusing and/or spotty communication from a government agency is normal. I wish it was better, but all's well that ends well. Don't lose hope if you run into these kind of issues. Just a little persistence and they will work themselves out.
