We got to the consulate at 6.45; earlier than we'd intended, but there ended up being no traffic at all. So we sat in the car until 7 (it was raining), then walked up to the entrance. The signs there said they didn't open till 8.30 so Scott got kind of annoyed with me b/c we were there so early (first in line, no one else there yet). I assured him I knew what I was doing b/c of my good friends on VJ and that the doors would open at 7.45.

Actually, they let us in before 7.30. We went through security and then downstairs to a waiting room. We were given the lovely letter A. I do like being first (competitive nature).

After a short wait the guard took letters A-D into the elevator and up to the 19th floor. (The consulate actually has a gorgeous view of the city, btw.) We went to a window where we were asked for our appointment letter and passports. We sat and waited a bit longer. Then we were called up again and asked for our paperwork. The woman asked us for things in the order they were on the checklist; birth certificate, police certificate, affidavit of support. Plus the medical, but I forget if that was first or what. She asked us for the original plus a copy of the birth certificate, but Scott hadn't made a photocopy of it so we only had the original. She gave us a very annoyed look, then went and copied it for us. After that she was friendly again though, so it was all good.

Our lawyer had advised me to ask for a copy of the vaccination report once they had opened the medical. I did, and the woman said we should have already been given a copy of it, so to look in the x-ray. I wasn't sure if it was okay for us to open it, but she said go ahead. It wasn't in there though, so she copied that for us too.

We sat and waited some more, then were called to another window to pay the fee, then sat and waited some more (fun). Then we were called up for his fingerprints, after which we again sat and waited (more fun). Finally we were called for the interview. The man very extremely nice and friendly. He asked how we met and what each of us does for a living. He commented that our paperwork was very organized and asked who was responsible for it. Scott gave me credit but really it was our lawyer. He went over a few of the photos from our original application and asked where a few of them had been taken. And that was it! He said our financials looked good, Scott was in good health, and everything was in order, so we were approved. He said we should get our visa in plenty of time for our wedding (which is in less than 3 weeks). We were out of there at 9.20.

Oh and a side note: everyone says how you're not allowed to bring in all these things, and there's a list outside of what not to bring in, like even a purse. We saw lots of people there with bags and purses that had been let in, even someone with a stroller! But I'm glad we went prepared.
