I'll skip the whole hows of getting there and shuttle etc; there is abundant info on that.
We had K1 and K2. My child is 10 years old.
We had a few complications in our case. The first being Legal Custody from the court which according to my research, was mandatory to bring to the Embassy. By the time we got that, NOA2 was close to expiry. We also needed to have a "Permit to Travel" issued by the Court for my Child to be removed from the jurisdiction and travel abroad. After that we processed the passport and NOA2 had already expired. Made a few phone inquiries and sent emails, I was told that I could schedule an interview and Consular Officer will grant extension after he/she determines the relationship is bonafide.
Then the medical: When we went to Wilcare for our appointment, they said I need a separate FTP letter from NVC addressed to my child. I told them that K2 derivatives do not receive anything in their own name. It would seem that Wilcare had not dealt with K2 before. I was turned away and asked to bring something from the Embassy advising them to proceed with K2 medical.
Called the Embassy and received an email response after 8 or so days. Went back to Wilcare, they still seemed confused and after a while, finally agreed.
Finally made it to the interview, 3 separate folders for everything that I had broken into 3 categories i.e. Mine and my Child's documents, My fiancé's documents and relationship evidence. We were moved from the Nonimmigrant cue to the Immigrant one. We were called for oath and fingerprints, just mine though. Then the wait started....there were a few families, quite a few individuals too, a few couples. I was looking at the windows and one in the far end of the hall for some reason caught my attention, a couple with the baby had gone there and for some very odd and unknown reason I wanted that window for the interview...lol. I'd call it my gut
Kept anticipating my turn and lucky meeeee I got that window. My K2 walked ahead of me and was at the window before I could reach. It was a male consular officer and an extremely courteous one. Here are the questions
1. How did you two meet?? We had met through a spiritual group on FB, explained further details of the how
2. What's the name of the group?? Told him the group title
3. When was this?? 2017
4. When and where did you two first meet?? 2018 in Dubai
5. For how long?? 15 days
6. When did you get engaged?? Well, he sent a ring for Nikah and he put the actual engagement ring on my finger when we met in Dubai after Nikah
7. Has he been to Pakistan?? Yes, he came to meet my family and my child
8. When was this? Told him the dates
9. For how long?? 15 days
10. He has been married before? No
11. Why did your previous marriage end?? Told him the reasons
10. Would you say he (My fiancé) is a religious person?? No, he's not
11. Then why was he in a spiritual group?? Spirituality does not have much to do with religion, in most cases they are quite the opposite.
12. (Turned to my child smiling) Do you know D? Yes
13. (Wider Smile) Do you like him?? Yeah (sheepish grin)
14. What do you think about D? I think he's good
Turned back to me and gave me the best news of our lives "I am approving your case (I muttered a rather excited "REALLY") it was pretty obvious and I appreciate that you came prepared, you will receive your visa in a couple of weeks. You must travel before your medical expires. You will have 90 days to marry your fiancé"
"Sigh of relief*
Me: But my work requires 3 month notice
CO: Let's see...here's your medical, you are good to enter US before 11th of June.
Me: Aren't you gonna look at the custody papers??
CO: The custody papers??
Me: Yeah, I had read I was supposed to bring these papers to interview.
CO: Okay...I don't need them but sure (Handed him the originals). Great! If I were you, I'd have them in my carry on, traveling to US.
Me: Great! Thank you so so much! You made my day!
CO: Have a great day!
Me: You too!
Received our visas in 32 business days and 56 calendar days. Did have a big red flag; We had dated for a couple months only before we decided to get engaged but we had known each other for over a year. Reading the stories on VJ, it seemed like a red flag but we had already filed by the time we joined VJ and now we are grateful that we did not twist the facts to make it into an acceptable relationship timeline. We sent ton of evidence to USCIS, photos, chat and call records, two page long story of how we met, each. CO did not ask to see any document during interview.
From the time of scheduling interview to visa issuance, Embassy has been responsive to every email and phone call we made. Alhamdolillah!
