Review Topic: K1 Visa

I had a little bit of trouble finding the embassy in the beginning due to all of the construction, but once I found it, the process was very smooth! If you are coming by tube, vauxhall is the most direct station - the embassy is about a 10 minute walk from there.

My appointment was at 10:30 and I arrived about an hour early - and waited in a cafe opposite the embassy (I think it was called Darby's) until around 10:15, then made my way to the embassy. When you arrive, there will likely be a small queue - you have to have out your passport and DS-160 - which they check, and then you will go through airport style security (no need to take shoes or coat off though, as long as there is nothing in your pockets). After security, I walked up to the main building, where I saw two lines. The lady who checked my passport and DS-160 told me to skip these two lines, so I did - and went straight to the front desk, and said I was here for a K1 visa (this felt very strange, but it indeed was the correct thing to do!!). The lady at the desk then checked me in, put a sticker on my ds-160 (with my number on it) and told me to go up the lift, turn left, and then left again, and take a seat in the waiting area until my number was called. The first time my number was called, I went up to the desk and handed over all of the relevant forms - had a nice chat with the man there who put me at ease, and he then handed over my chest x-ray, and my rights for when I enter the states, and told me to sit down and wait for my number to be called again. The second time my number was called, I went to a different window and had to raise my right hand, and promise that all the information provided was the truth. The interview then began - it was led by a lovely lady who again, really put me at ease. She asked me around 4 questions in total. They were - how did you meet, when is the last time you met in person, how did he propose, and what are your plans for the wedding. She then typed a few things on her computer, and told me that she was approving my visa! Overall, with waiting times included, it took around 1.5 hours - but the time I spent actually at the window totalled around maybe 15 minutes - so make sure to bring a book (you can also use your phone while waiting - they have free wifi!).
