Review Topic: K1 Visa

I just had my interview this morning and am happy to share I received my visa! This forum really put me at ease so thank you to everyone who shared their experience. I can validate everything that people have said: the staff here are really friendly and it's a clear process once you get there. My appointment was for 8:30am, I arrived around 7:45am and I was #16 in line (they were at #4 when I got upstairs). They seemed to move pretty quickly but I was there for a solid two hours from start to finish.

A note for Canadians about Criminal Background Checks:
This is a relatively new change to the K-1 process. They no longer accept "normal" criminal background checks from your local police agency. You have to obtain a "Certified Criminal Record Check" through the RCMP, which includes finger prints (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/steps-getting-a-certified-criminal-record-check?wbdisable=true) You also have to make sure you request the check under the Privacy Act, NOT under the visa/immigration check. More info is here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country/Canada.html (click "Police, Court, Prison Records) Interestingly, one person before me was denied because he didn't have the correct type of background check, but another person before me was approved with the wrong type. I would avoid taking that chance and just get the correct one.

A few other people were denied because they didn't have the correct type of documentation or were missing original copies of things like divorce certificates.

Questions they asked me during the interview portion:
- How and when did you meet your fiance?
- Do you have wedding plans?
- Do you have children?
- How often do you see each other?
- What's the longest amount of time you've spent in the U.S.?
She also asked me to explain my name changes (I was married previously, changed my name and then after our divorce went back to my maiden name).

It was a nerve-wracking morning but as long as you are very organized you'll be fine!
