Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

The staff that we interacted with were all very helpful and professional, but there was one security officer at the main entrance who seemed a bit high strung and confrontational, although we were called by the other security guard. We went through security, much like when you visit the airport, except they let us keep our shoes on. We checked in and were asked to sit in section 3 in the large waiting room. Our appointment was for 8 am, and I think we were called back at approximately 8:20. The interviewing officer came out an looked right at my husband and called his name, so I was impressed that she seemed to be well acquainted with the application we filed. She took us to her office, swore us, and we continued with the interview. She asked for our ID, and for a copy of my birth certificate, which I was able to furnish, and asked if she could keep it, which was fine She asked about our work - we were both IS analysts, although my husband is no longer interested in tech and wants to garden, and she told us that she would like to be a park ranger. She reviewed the questions on the application, asked about our wedding, and we had a very nice conversation before she let us know that she was approving his application. She verified our address, let us know that it should arrive in 7-10 days, and that he is approved to find work and travel abroad. She gave us good advice not to file too early to have the restrictions removed, but to file about 60 days ahead of the date. Throughout the process, she was very kind, made us feel comfortable, and was very supportive.

Someone had suggested to my husband that we should hire an attorney. Unless there is a language barrier, a complicated legal history, or a complicated family history, you will likely not need a lawyer for at least the initial interview. If you follow the advice on the VisaJourney page on how to file and follow a lot of the hints, you will more than likely be okay. Be sure to follow instructions, be polite, try not to volunteer too much, and be honest.
