Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Appointment time 10:30 am...we arrived at 9:45. At 10:27 wife nervous and she needed to use bathroom....of course shortly after she left they called our number...Murphy’s law. I approached the lady to interview us and she said “where is your spouse?” I replied “she needed to use the restroom but I am sure she is running back now” Interviewer said” well she picked a fine time to go at her appointment time” Very rude and that set the tone for the rest of the interview....wife was there within 45 seconds of our number being called.

Next we proceed to follow her down the hallway to her office...she was walking very fast and my wife is short and could not keep up....the lady stopped In The middle of the hallway, never turned around but waited until she heard us catching up then continued to her office. Immediately upon entering she sweared us in...no my wife’s English is pretty good...she is new but has had 18 mo this of English school...but she still needs people to speak slowly. This lady was complaining as soon as we entered her office she had a long list of questions and we needed to get through them fast....she kept repeating this throughout the interview...made us feel as though us being there was putting her out...it is her job to interview us.

Well, my wife got confused on the first 2 questions about how many marriages she had, her parents years of birth, my City of birth...this lady was rattling her cage big time. Everything in our file (adjusting K1) was perfect...nothing missing, everything there....what should have been a text book interview turned Into a interrogation...she got mad at me and told me I should have known to bring an interpreter (she dialed one up on speaker phone in less than 1 minute). She re-swore my wife in and when she didn’t stand up I motioned with a “thumbs up” to stand up...the interviewer barked at me...”you didn’t just hit her leg did you?), “of course not was my reply”!

So now the lady has me freaked out, thinking she might call the cops on me or take me to a different room. So I crossed my arms across my chest and pushed my chair back about 1 foot so my wife would not be tempted to turn her head to look at me for any coaching because this lady only wanted to hear from my wife, not me.

We finally made it through after about 20 minutes, she took the medical and the “bonafides” proof of relationship, asked for 3 pictures one of us together, one of me with her family and one of my wife’s with my family, beneficiary on life I surance and 401k, a few other things.

By this point my wife was shaking almost in tears, it seemed the entire interview was a total loss...this woman Interviewing us was very angry and very rushed. On the way out she said she needed to do additional background investigation based on a few of my wife’s responses and that we would receive the decision in 6-8 weeks via snail mail...we were devestated to say the least. Then she stated that she thought we would be approved because the bonafides were solid. My wife broke I to tears in the parking lot thinking she screwed the whole thing up, I reassured her she told the truth and answered to the best of her ability and if any RFE comes we will submit and get this fixed.

I had to fly to Kansas City immediately following our interview for work, so I took my wife home...and calmed her down. This was at about 12:00, 90 minutes after the interview started.....at 5:15 in Dallas Love Field I got a USCIS text message our I-485 AOS had been APPROVED! I nearly fell over, I couldn’t believe it....sent to my wife and called her FaceTime and pure joy on her face...made me so happy...God Works in mysterious ways!
