Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We had our marriage-based green card interview this morning. It went very smoothly. She didn't approve it on the spot, but she said we have more than enough evidence and that she expects to approve it later today after reviewing everything.

The officer started by asking for some specific information that she needed (passports, birth certificates, marriage certificate, and drivers licenses/IDs).  Then, when she was finished with her initial checklist, she asked if we had any additional evidence to offer.  So then I laid out everything I had brought on her desk, and we went through the documents one by one. I had several documents to demonstrate we lived at the same address, a few to show combined finances (for example, I had a bank statement from our joint checking account - at this point, she said she didn't want to look at our finances, but she did ask to see our matching debit cards for the account, and we also showed matching credit cards and matching Costco cards).  She chose a few of those new documents and made photo copies of them for her records, then gave us back the originals. She also looked through all the photos and asked questions about a few of them, but she didn't keep or copy any of them.  She did keep our latest tax return but gave back all the other financial documents (mostly bank statements, etc) without making copies.

After going through all the evidence, she started the Q&A part of the interview.  She asked all the standard questions on the i-485 (are you a prostitute?  do you have any plans to overthrow the US government? etc), and then asked more open-ended questions about our relationship (what is your husband's birthday?  Where was he born? How did you meet?  Tell me about how you got engaged?  Did he get down on one knee?)  She directed questions to one of us at a time, but asked each of us specific yet open-ended questions.  There were some questions I couldn't answer...  For example, in my story about the proposal I told her that we got engaged at the place where two rivers joined, and so she asked for the names of the rivers.  But those rivers' names were too hard for me to pronounce when I learned them, so I didn't remember the names, just the name of the nearby city.  But that memory lapse didn't seem to be a problem.

At the end, she told us that she needs to review everything one last time, but that she expects to approve it by tomorrow unless she notices something missing (in which case she will mail us a letter and we can respond back by mail).   Then she escorted us out of the building.

It's such a relief to have that interview step finished after 19+ months of waiting.
