Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

The interview lasted 36-40mins not really sure but that’s how I felt.

Interview took place some weeks ago and I got to the place 30mins before the scheduled time. The place was not so crowded but you could sense the tension and anxiety most people had. I went in with my spouse and lawyer and we all had to relax just to get ready.
Exactly 2pm we were called in by a lady who had another lady (Intern:trainee) with her. We walked in and everyone seem pretty nice and welcoming. Our officer was really nice and didnt put us under any pressure until after we took the oath. She started with our address and because we had change our address which was not reflecting on the file , that made her curious, she looked at our IDs and saw that we had just recently gotten the state ID (4months before the interview) She asked why and I told her I needed to get a second form of ID and to be honest, I wasn’t really a fan of state ID since I had my passport or Work authorization ID. My wife had her license as well but her drivers license has always had her parent Address where she grew up and never had any reason to change her address on the card even after living in over 4 different places during this time.
The officer requested for supporting documents and she went through the file looked at the financial statement and asked why My name is reflecting the most in most transaction from
The statement. I was surprise because that’s the account I basically use for transaction rather than my personal account since my other bank is a lil bit far to where I live and the joint account bank offers more benefit. She asked to see bills etc which we shared with her and after some questions she seems satisfied. I’m bad to arranging files plus most of my bills r paperless.

( I would like to advise others as well, please ensure you do most of these thing yourself ) decide on the documents you will like to bring along, do not act based on your lawyer’s request or advise. Go there with all necessary documents you feel you need even the ones that do not have both spouses name )) your credit bills etc. just decide on your documents and let the lawyer decide on his/her own too. You can come in with yours and let the lawyer come in with whatever documents she want).

She asked for my credit statement but I didn’t come with that because I didn’t know I needed it since this wasn’t a joint credit statement. She needed to confirm that we were paying bills i think even though we had our names reflecting on the bills.

Some of the questions asked were ,

. When did you guys get married

How did you meet

When did marriage come into the conversation

Who attended the wedding and what did you guys do after the wedding

Have your met each other’s parent

Do you have plans as regards having kids

How many many kids do you want ( asked us separately) Lol this is something me and my spouse always disagree on . She want three but I actually want two . And I’m sure before you get to three Atleast you get to have two first.

If we’re living alone ( we were)

She joke about us having pet and since my spouse does not like pet , we decide to hold on on that for now . She asked why my spouse does not like Dogs and even joke about us getting a cat then.

She asked about my 10years plan and if I was still in school.

Asked about our planned trip back home since we were planning to travel back in December to visit family and friends. ( We explain the situation as regards things r quite expensive right now).

Then she went through the usual 100 questions which got me smiling cos most of the questions are things i won’t ever consider doing..

At the end she gave us the generic paper (120 days to get a response) and asked if we had any question for her . I felt that was an opportunity to ask about the interview but i also didn’t know if that was appropriate so I decided to say no . Although my spouse did ask about a place close by where we could eat which got us smiling. She likes food a lot.

She didn’t say if we were approved or not but I decided to just let Jesus take the wheel and guide us through the process.

The officer was really nice and she reminded me of my boss .

Over a month and some days we haven’t heard back and based on experiences I have heard about, seems like is becoming a norm in Baltimore. All we can hope for now is God.

NB- My medical was a year old by the time i did the interview , I did anothee medical before going for the interview but the officer never asked. So To avoid unnecessary spending, i would advise you wait until after the interview to do another medical.

Key point

- Ensure to listen carefully, our officer was really nice to even ask me some questions twice to be sure I heard her right (something I do appreciate as i tend to mix words together).

2 . If your lawyer says you don’t need certain documents kindly ignore, just go with the documents and keep it in the file you have in your hands. Let the lawyer come with the supporting documents he/she want and you go with what you feel you need just Incase the officer ask.

3. Guys you need to prepare, trust me there r simple questions that might come up even though you think you remember them, during the interview you might forget . ( even Mia spouse mentioned us moving in together 3days after d wedding meanwhile I completely moved in 4 days after the wedding. Still had somethings in my previous place so I was half packed but to her is all about the day I move half of my stuffs in. (Although everything can not be perfect especially for recently married Couples) Somethings do take time.

4. Do not go in there believing officer think the same way, just because an officer was particular about change of address does not mean others will. Some just want to hear you guys communicate words of understanding. Some are particular about details while some might just want to verify information. They are paid to do their jobs and I’m pretty sure no one mean no harm to anyone. All you can do is to be sincere and hope for the best.

I will keep you guys posted if i get any update from the office.

You can also message me if you have questions or need someone to share info with while we all patiently wait for a response .

Thanks
