Review Topic: K1 Visa

My appointment was booked for 9:30 AM and as I entered the embassy, they gave me ticket #9 out of the 30 K-1 applicants they saw that day. I know they saw 30 applicants because I sat in the waiting room and watched every single one of them walk in, give their interviews and leave. I was made to sit there right up until the end.

I went upstairs after the security check and was directed to the waiting area for K-1 interviews. Within 15 minutes my number was called, I went to the window and the officer was friendly, asked me general questions about how my fiancee and I met, how many times I'd been to the US etc. He took all of the documents I was required to bring to the interview and told me to sit back down until my number is called again.

I sat down, one hour passed, two hours passed, three hours passed. I saw other applicants come in, get called up and finish the entire process within 20 minutes and leave. I saw all of the ticket numbers get called after my ticket, all the way up until ticket #30. By this time it was 1 PM, I was the last person waiting in the room. There were no officers at any of the windows, they'd all gone for their lunch break.

After another hour passed I saw one member of staff return, I got up and asked her what the hell was going on. I explained that I'd been waiting for a very long time and she assured me I would eventually have my number called out and that they hadn't forgotten about me. I sat down for another 20 minutes and finally another lady called out and asked if I was applicant #9. I said yes, got up and walked to her window. I was furious, being forced to wait five hours with no explanation of what was going on. I was starving and unlike them I didn't have the option to leave and get something to eat. I didn't expect them to bring me tea and biscuits, I understand I was not their guest nor their customer, but I felt like I was treated like a criminal.

The lady was holding my birth certificate and it seemed they had a problem with the fact I was born in Afghanistan. She asked a few more questions, much of what was already asked by the first officer, which I answered and she realized there was nothing wrong with my application. After feeling like an idiot for aimlessly delaying everything, she told me all was well and they would be issuing me the visa.

tldr; horrible experience, went in at 9 AM and left at 2 PM.
