Review Topic: K1 Visa

My K1 visa interview was scheduled for 8am. As other reviews have mentioned - arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before the scheduled time or you will be turned away.

I got to the consulate at 7:30am, there was one person in front of me. The security guard told us we'd have to wait 15 minutes before entering, but it took less than 10 minutes. Once inside the building, you give your passport to security and you will receive a sheet with your number and required documentation. The security was similar to an airport, and you leave cellphone/ fitbit at the front.

The required documentation included:
- Proof of Payment (instructions or email when you booked the interview)
- Passport and photocopy of passport (biography page only)
- 2 US passport sized photos
- Proof of Canadian status, if you are not a Canadian citizen
- Original birth certificate (long form) and photocopy
- Original police check
- Original intent to marry from petitioner (within 30 days of interview)
- Original I-134 Form
- Copy of 2016 IRS tax return/ receipt

You will have time to assemble the documentation when waiting for your number to be called. I was #6 so I only waited 15 minutes to hand in documentation and about 5 minutes before the interview.

Window # 1 (Documentation Collection)
I had a very friendly woman who made small talk, she began by asking my fiancés address and phone number. She collected all the documentation on the sheet, except asked for a copy of my fiancés passport bio page, 2016 W2's, letter of employment, pay stubs, and banking history. This wasn't a problem for me as I was over prepared and had every set of documents possible.

Window # 2 (Interview)
I had another very friendly woman, who made small talk and cracked some jokes. All around the staff at the Montreal were amazing. The questions from the interview included:
- Who is petitioning you?
- Tell me about Michael? (I gave a quick history on how we met working in Ottawa)
- When did you decide to take the relationship to the next level?
- How often do we see each other? (She was impressed we see each other every 2-3 weeks!)
- What was your longest trip to the US?
- Have you ever been married?
- Have you ever been convicted of a crime?
- Have you ever lived in another country? (She did mention it is much easier if you haven't lived aboard before)
- When do you plan on getting married?

After that I got the best piece of pink paper saying "Welcome to the US"! She mentioned it would only take 1-2 weeks for my visa to arrive!!

This is by far the easiest part of the K1 visa process. Be prepared and everything will work out.
