Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Arrived at 8:45 for a 10:00 am appointment. We were a March filer in Potomac. Our case was expedited to the embassy. Parked in a lot about 0.1 miles from the consulate. The line for immigrant visas was very short, so we only had to wait about five minutes before progressing through security. Once in the compound we were sent to a window to process our documents. The agent at the window commented as to the organization of our packets and appreciated that the documents were easily pulled for review and stapling. After we completed this submission, we sat in the big common waiting area for about 90 minutes (with my two very young stepchildren, thankfully the youngest passed out). We were called to the one of the counters for our interview. The interviewer was obviously not Dominican, nor did she have a very good Spanish dialect, something that at times made it hard for my wife to understand the questions asked. We were asked where we met, how we met, the story behind our relationship, how I support my family, why we love each other, where we were married, do my step children like me, and plans in the US. The agent seemed very surprised that I had been in the DR five times in the last twelve months to see my wife, at which point all I could say was that I am fortunate to have the means to travel, and being together is important to a healthy marriage. It became quite conversational from that point, and she agent seemed to enjoy speaking to a gringo who could speak fairly fluent Spanish. The agent handed us the approval paper and we were on our way out shortly before noon.

Come prepared and smile. If the love is real, it is a day that in the end will change your lives forever.
