Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

My husband and I arrived early the immigration office downtown. Security suggested we wait at a coffee shop a couple blocks away, as "the waiting room is pretty boring", and come back about a half hour before our appointment. Our appointment was at 1:30 and we arrived again at 12:50. We were glad we went early - there was a line out the door!

After security we checked in at the reception desk and were given a number and told to wait upstairs. The waiting room was completely full. At 1:30 it was announced for everyone waiting for citizenship to go down stairs - the room pretty much cleared out with the exception of maybe 10 people. Directly after a woman came out and called my husbands name and took us back to her office.

We were sworn in and then she began with confirming our names and addresses. The interview flowed really well and felt like more of a conversation than Q&A. The interviewer was friendly and seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say. She had our file in front of her and I realized I may have gone a little overboard with our Adjustment of Status Application - as the prongs barely closed...oops. It was obviously she had read through everything thoroughly - which felt kind of nice that she took the time. She asked how and when we met, asked my husband to point out who was who in our photos, asked if I had met his family. We had a unique case where I spent a few years in his country with him before coming here and we had a lengthy conversation about cultural differences and how we cope. The entire interview felt like we were just talking with another person who was interested in our story. All together the interview took about a half hour - 45 minutes.

She complemented me on my organization of all the documentation and evidence we brought. She collected it ALL and added it to our file. She told us on the spot we were approved and it would take a couple weeks to get the card. She also added that if we were as thorough and organized as we were for this that we would have no problem with anything down the line in the process.
