Review Topic: K1 Visa

My appointment was for 7:45, November 30, 2016. I showed up at 7:20. There was a long line up outside and it gets long very fast. It was so cold. Luckily I was third in line! Security guard finally comes to open the door at 7:30. He told us to prepare to show our DS-160 (confirmation page) and passport. Also, turn off your phone. Only one person was allowed in at a time.

After I presented these documents to a man at the lobby entrance with an iPad, he gave me a laminated paper with instructions on what order to put my documents. He also gave me another paper to hold on to.

Then, I passed through screening like you would at the airport. I put my medium sized purse and coat on a few trays to be scanned. I also gave my cellphone to the security guard. My screen is cracked and it is old so I wasn't worried about anyone stealing it (I wanted to buy a new phone with a plan, but since I knew I was going to America, I had to hold off on it!).

Afterwards, I went DOWNSTAIRS in a basement area. *TIP: Sit as close as possible to the elevator. I had the opportunity there to sit and read the instructions on the laminated paper they gave me. The instructions were to put my documents in a certain order. For K1 visa, it is proof of payment, passport, passport photocopy, 2 photos, medical documents, ORIGINAL birth certificate and a translation document (if you are from Quebec you will need this!), ORIGINAL criminal record and your American fiance's income tax returns and the sponsor form. I think that was the order they asked for, but it was pointless because they ask for it in another order at the counter.

Then a security guard goes to the elevator and asks everyone to stand in a line in front of the elevator. Everyone rushes to the elevator. This is why you need to sit close to the elevator, so you can be first in that line!

Anyway, then we go way upstairs to another waiting room with counters. K1 visa applicants have an area where they sit at the left. I sat there and waited for my number to be called up but the quality of the speakers were terrible.

I went to two counters in total.

Counter 1 - A lady asked for certain documents. She didn't take all the documents though! She didn't even look at the proof that we continued our relationship. Anyway, it is good to have them just in case since other people had to present them. I think they didn't ask for those extra documents because I am born and raised in Canada with no past issues, divorces, kids, no baggage and my husband-to-be is similar, born and raised in America, good income and no major age gap between us (just three years).

She told me to wait again for my number to be called up to see someone else.

Counter 2 - A super friendly charming educated guy asked me to take an oath, give my finger print, and answer a few questions. These are the questions I remembered: Where did I meet my fiance? When was the last time I saw him. Any past divorces or kids? Wedding plans? Have I ever been denied entry to the USA? What is his occupation? Have you met his family?

I elaborated on the question about where I met my fiance, went on about how we have many things in common and we get along just great. I brought in my humour and was as friendly as I could get.

Then he said "Welcome to the USA". He gave me a generic paper and told me to wait for an email in a week. It could take two weeks to get my visa! I asked him if I could get rid of my apartment but he said to wait until I physically get my visa in my hands because they still need to process the papers. If that's the case, then why say "Welcome to the USA"? Anyway, he said my case is simple and based on everything I presented, there should be no problems. Well let's see about that! I will keep you guys updated.
