Fellow VJ’s:
To begin I understand and know that my journey wasn’t a “normal time-frameâ€. From start to finish (129) days. My appointment with my husband and daughter was Friday, August 19, 2016 here in Santo Domingo & we are picking-up our passports, today Monday, August 22, 2016 with visas in them ready to go. We started this process April 2016.
In preparation of our interview I brought everything including the kitchen sink. I must have killed at least 4 trees with the amount of paper I had. In fact, most people in the line were only holding maybe a few pieces of paper or even maybe a small yellow interoffice envelope. People were staring at the fact I was hold 2 very large 3inch 3-ring binders.
There were 6 different lines, which people stood in according to what time you appointment was, if you had children, if you were handicap, or a resident of the US. The lines that were not for people that had children, wheelchairs, or residency. Were marked my 7:00am, 8:00am, and 9:00am and so on. It all depended on what time your appointment letter had marked to, which line you got in.
Going through the security line was standard to any type of federal building you would find in the US. Make sure to leave your cell phones at home. I had on my Apple iWatch on and I was told to place it on airplane mode, while in the embassy compound.
Once we got through security we walked through a very large and beautiful courtyard and entered the main building.
In the building, we were greeted by a contract worker, whom reviewed our interview letter, again. We then were given a number ticket (118), just like the kind you get at the deli at the supermarket.
My husband and kids sat, as I stood in the line to turn in our documents.
Once at the window the woman asked for all of the original documents that we had submitted. She than told us to go sit towards the far-end of the very large lobby. We took our seats towards windows 9 & 10.
We watched as numbers before us and after us get called. I must admit I was getting a bit worried, as our number wasn’t being called, but at last it was and we got called to window 2.
Once at the window we were greeted by a very nice mannered officer. She spoke to me in English and to my husband in Spanish with no issue.
She asked us three questions:
Me- Where does your husband work? (I told her where and what he did.) The officer smiled and said okay.
My husband: What is the name of the company your wife works for? (Husband answered)
My husband: Why did you give your daughter the name she has? (Husband answered)
She then said to my husband in Spanish Congratulation Welcome to The United States of America.
Due to my medical issues our visas and passports were ready the following business day for pick-up at the embassy, so we can travel home.
Overall, I must say that every staff person I came into contact was very professional and polite.
