My appointment was scheduled for 12pm, however I ended up getting there at 11.10am and they let me straight through. If you can get there a little early, do. They use a ticketing system which is essentially first come, first served... So the sooner you are in, the sooner you are out. Your appointment time is more of a guide than an absolute.
Outside the embassy there is a little tent. Generally, you have to queue to get to the tent, however the line was empty when I got there. A friendly lady asked for my letter from the embassy and my passport, she checked it and sent me over to a door. Through the door were very simple airport-style security checks. After that I walked around the corner into the embassy and was assigned a ticket number at reception. I was then directed through to a big waiting room and told to sit near the front.
The waiting room has lots of windows (like at the bank) around the side of it and big screens - you wait for your number to show on the screen and then go to the window they tell you to go to. Very simple.
You go to the window TWICE. The first time you are called do not be alarmed, you will simply be asked for your documents and some very simple biographical information to confirm your application is accurate. This man was very friendly. This took around 5 minutes and once we were done he told me to go back to the waiting room and wait to be called again for my interview. (NOTE - they take your documents at this stage, but they are given back to you at the interview. I think they just take them to scan onto the system.)
So anyway, I must have waited another 40 minutes for my actual interview. When I finally got to the window, I was greeted by an extremely warm and friendly American lady. She immediately put me at ease. She made me take an oath that I would give only true information and once I had done so, the interview began.
It just felt like a chat! She asked me how I first met my partner, when did we meet in real life, where he lives, where he grew up, trips we made to each other, have we met each other's families. She didn't even ask to see photos of us or plane tickets (I had come super prepared.) I was so nervous in the lead up to this interview but as I was there I realised just how simple it is - It was literally questions I knew all the answers to.
After about 2 minutes of talking she told me she was very happy to approve me, wished me well and that was that! I left, rushed out and then phoned my fiancé crying happy tears!!
