Writing this on behalf of my husband- As everyone mentions, there's a little marquee set up outside of the Embassy with lines quickly forming. Everyone just gets in line and though there was a sign that listed immigrants/nonimmigrants, etc to form a line, they ladies working that day seemed a bit exasperated at a few of us who were there for IR1/K1s. They asked for DS160s as soon as we approached the desk. I explained that my husband was for IR1/CR1 and his was a DS260. We were quickly told to step aside and wait. A few others for K1s were told to do the same.
Despite having read on other forums that spouses/fiancees have attended the appointments, it's like getting into a VIP club; if you're not on a list, you're not getting in! (we did the form online requesting permission to attend, but never received a response. This was done when we scheduled the appointment)
In he went through the airport security and through the check in process (American man took documents) as many others have described. After my husband got his first ticket and was instructed to go to window 13. As he went to go around the corner for window 13, one of the ladies that had been working the marque grabbed him and instructed him to sit at the back with everyone else instead. This delayed him by 30 minutes as this group of people were being called by row for visit visas. He ended up being instructed to window 22 which is where he was told he was in the wrong place when he explained why he was there. He was sent on to window 13 as he was originally told until this woman threw a wrench in it!
Thankfully, the American lady at window 13 was ready for him and pleasant.
He was asked "How did you meet?"
Mind you, this year will be our 10th anniversary and we have one child. He essentially gave our life story when she asked this question! She asked where we'd be staying and she asked about our daughter. Everything was like a very casual conversation and went by very quickly.
All in all, other than the SNAFU of the woman direction everyone in one direction without knowing what their appointment was for, all was very smooth and easy. The husband said everyone was very nice and easy going.
