Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We arrived at the Newark office at 9:10 for our 9:30 appointment. The waiting area was filled with couples and several of them had lawyers. We gave our letter to the woman behind the glass window and she told us to have a seat and wait to be called. At 9:45 we were called to the door by a man perhaps in his early thirties. He had us swear an oath to tell the truth and then we sat down facing his desk. He was behind the desk with a stack of papers and he proceded to flip through our application and ask some questions. He first asked about the address and then told us that the Turkish birth certificate we had submitted was not an official birth certificate...it's a Turkish ID. The ID says birth certificate and the translation stated birth certificate but apparently they do not accept it. He was really nice about it though. He said it happens to almost every Turkish citizen. He told us the proper paper to get and then he asked a few more questions about our jobs and when we met. He pointed out that my wife was from Idaho and had lived in Colorado and asked what brought her to NJ. She pointed to me and said him and then told about how we met etc. He asked if we had been married before or had any children and he asked if I had ever been out of status. Then he asked the yes/no questions and told us that when we submit the proper birth certificate then he will approve the greencard. He said we should bring it in person sometime in Oct. and my wife doesn't need to show up. Then I said, "Oh" a little disappointedly and he asked, "what's wrong?" I told him I was planning to attend a conference in Canada at the end of September but I guess I will not be able to leave the U.S. since my case is pending. He asked the dates and said he would see what he could do. He wanted us to wait outside 5 minutes then called us back and set an appointment for me to show the birth certificate on the Wed. before I will go to Canada. He gave us a print out stating what to bring and the date and also mentioned I should bring my EAD. Overall, we thought he was extremely helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable about our case. Although he didn't ask a lot of details, it was clear he had read through everything. He also did not look at anything we brought with us, but that was fine with us. He also said he would stamp my passport with the greencard so I can go to Canada and said your case is approved. I hope everyone else will be interviewed by helpful and courteous people like him. Good luck everyone!
